History

This memorial cemetery honors Nicholas Fagan (c. 1785-1852), an Irish-born rancher who settled in Power and Hewetson's colony on the San Antonio River in 1829 as one of Refugio County's earliest Irish Catholic colonists. A Texas patriot, Fagan signed the Goliad Declaration of Independence and became known as the 'Angel of Refugio' for donating his corn crop and hundreds of cattle to feed the region's starving residents during the Texas Revolution. He was buried near his original homestead, where a state historical marker commemorates him.
