History

The O'Connor family cemetery lies on the ranch of Thomas O'Connor (c. 1819-1887), an Irish immigrant from County Wexford who came to Texas in 1834 with his uncle, empresario James Power. O'Connor received a Mexican land grant in the Power and Hewetson colony, signed the Goliad Declaration of Independence, and built one of the largest cattle empires in Texas, eventually fencing more than 500,000 acres. He died at his Refugio-area ranch in 1887 and was buried in the family burial ground near the headquarters home on the San Antonio River.
