History
The Paramount Theatre was built by grocery magnate H. O. Wooten adjacent to his Hotel Wooten and opened on May 19, 1930. Designed by the David S. Castle firm, its atmospheric auditorium re-creates a Spanish/Moorish courtyard at night, complete with a domed ceiling of drifting clouds and twinkling stars in a Pueblo Deco style. After closing in the mid-1970s, it was saved from demolition by the Abilene Preservation League, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in December 1982, and fully restored in 1987 as a performing-arts venue.
