History

The Grace Museum occupies the former Hotel Grace, a four-story building erected in 1909 by Col. W. L. Beckham to serve travelers on the Texas and Pacific Railway and named for his daughter Grace. After the hotel (later the Drake Hotel) closed in 1973 and fell into disrepair, the Abilene Preservation League bought it in 1987, and a roughly $4.8 million restoration reopened it as a museum in 1992. Housing collections rooted in the Abilene Fine Arts Museum (founded 1937), the institution was renamed The Grace Museum in 1998 and today fills about 55,000 square feet with art, history, and children's galleries.
