History

The Masonic Cemetery is part of Abilene's municipal cemetery complex on Cottonwood Street, which began in 1881. Its oldest documented grave is that of Florence Phillips, buried in the Masonic section in 1881, a year before the local Masonic lodge was chartered; the city took over its care in 1928. Notables buried in the wider municipal cemetery include Mary Houston Morrow, a daughter of Sam Houston, and Abilene co-founder C. W. Merchant, who gave land for the burial ground.
