History

James M. Radford arrived in Abilene in 1883 and, at age twenty-one, bought out a bankrupt grocery to launch what became the J. M. Radford Grocery Company, one of the region's most important wholesale houses. From its warehouse and office headquarters on Oak Street, clad in Thurber brick with an oak-and-brass interior and early refrigeration, Radford supplied distribution centers across some 27 cities in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. The warehouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places but was later delisted.
