History

Mount Hope Cemetery lies just north of Wells in southern Cherokee County, on land that Texas Revolution veteran Joseph H. Bowman helped provide for a Methodist church and cemetery in 1875. Margaret 'Ruby' Hicks, buried in November 1875, was the first interment. Though the church later moved to Wells after the railroad arrived in 1886, the cemetery grew to hold more than 1,800 graves, including some 200 veterans and eight Confederate soldiers.
