History
Carmel Cemetery began in September 1848 with the burial of infant Alfred Ellison, son of pioneers Zachariah and Emily Ellison, who had acquired some 2,500 acres in northwest Smith County and gave the surrounding land as a community graveyard for the nearby Flora settlement. Carmel Baptist Church organized close by in 1853, and although the Flora community faded after the Civil War, the cemetery endured, with a preservation association forming in 1947. Its more than 780 graves span from 1848 to the present, and the Texas Historical Commission placed a marker here in 2018.
