History

Lowe's Chapel Cemetery marks the early settlement of Lowe's Chapel, about four miles north of Rusk in central Cherokee County. The area was settled in the 1850s along the old Cherokee Trace, also called the Hatchet Ferry Road, and took its name from an early church. By the late 20th century only the church and cemetery remained of the community, the cemetery holding a few hundred graves reaching back to the 1800s.
