History

Fort Concho was established in November 1867 at the confluence of the North and South Concho Rivers to protect West Texas frontier settlements and map the region. Built largely of local limestone, it comprised at least 40 buildings and served as base for the 4th Cavalry and later the 10th Cavalry "Buffalo Soldiers" until it was abandoned in 1889. Owned by the city of San Angelo since 1935, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and is one of the best-preserved U.S. Army posts in Texas.
