History

This building served as the chapel and post schoolhouse at Fort Concho, the U.S. Army post established in 1867 at the forks of the Concho River to protect the West Texas frontier. Garrisoned over its 22 years by the 4th Cavalry and the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry, the fort combined military duty with the religious and educational life of its soldiers and their families. Abandoned in 1889, Fort Concho was preserved as a museum beginning in 1929 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
