History

The Republic of the Rio Grande Museum in Laredo is housed in one of the city's oldest buildings, a sandstone-and-adobe structure built in the 1830s in the Mexican vernacular style. By local tradition it served as the capitol for federalist leaders who declared the breakaway Republic of the Rio Grande in 1840, a nation that lasted just 283 days with Laredo as its capital. Founded by the Laredo Historical Society in 1957, the museum opened to the public in February 1962.
