History

Casa Ortiz is a nearly 200-year-old hacienda in downtown Laredo at 915 Zaragoza Street, next to San Agustin Cathedral and the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum. The original three-room home was built by Don Jose Reyes Ortiz around 1830, with additional rooms added by his son Juan Pablo Ortiz later in the 19th century. Now owned by Webb County, the building has been leased since June 2021 to the nonprofit Laredo Cultural District, which uses it for rotating art exhibits, artisan markets, and courtyard performances, making it a centerpiece of the city's First Friday art walk.
