History
The cathedral traces to 1767, when Father Juan Jose de Lafita y Verri built the first Catholic chapel in the Spanish Villa de San Agustin de Laredo, founded in 1755. That adobe chapel gave way to a stone church in 1810, and the present Gothic Revival building, designed by French priest Pierre Yves Keralum with a 141-foot bell tower, was completed in 1872. San Agustin became the seat of the new Diocese of Laredo in 2000 and anchors the San Agustin de Laredo National Register historic district.
