Texas Lutheran traces its roots to a small German-language academy founded in Brenham in 1891. In 1912 Seguin businessmen lured the school west with land and cash, and it opened here with a single building on a former cotton field. This walk covers the historical marker that tells that story, the hall named for its first leader, the limestone chapel at the heart of campus, the library and auditorium, and an old family cemetery on the campus edge.
Texas Lutheran's story begins far from Seguin, in a small German-language academy founded in Brenham in 1891, and this relaxed campus walk follows how that school found its permanent home on a former cotton field beside the Guadalupe Valley town. In 1912 Seguin businessmen won the college with an offer of land and $20,000, and a century of growth has turned that single original building into a leafy, close-knit campus.
The state historical marker for Texas Lutheran College lays out the full arc: a synod school modeled on European gymnasiums and taught in both German and English, a turn toward training ministers, a 1929 merger with Swedish Lutheran Trinity College of Round Rock, and the name change to Texas Lutheran in 1932. Langner Hall, dating to 1947, honors the Rev. G. Langner, who led the Brenham school when it opened.
At the spiritual center of campus stands the Chapel of the Abiding Presence, built of Texas limestone in a Gothic-inspired style and dedicated in 1954. Jackson Auditorium, with seats for about 1,050, draws Seguin residents to concerts, the Mid-Texas Symphony and the annual Krost Symposium. And on the campus edge, a small family burial ground holds Col. Nathaniel Benton, a veteran of the Texas army of 1836 and a Texas Ranger, whose marker the state placed during the 1936 Centennial.
It's an easy, uncrowded walk that rewards anyone interested in the German and Scandinavian Lutheran roots of Central Texas.
