History

Winchell Cemetery serves the small southwestern Brown County town of Winchell, founded about 1900 near the McCulloch county line and renamed in 1903 for B.L. Winchell, president of the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway that built through the settlement. The town reached about 300 residents by 1914 before its business block burned in the mid-1920s; the cemetery, with several hundred graves, remains the community's enduring landmark.
