History

Newport Cemetery lies on the Jack–Clay county line just north of the community of Newport, which L. Hancock founded in 1872 as Bear Hill. When the post office opened, the name was changed in 1879 to Newport, coined from the initials of seven leading residents' surnames. The community, which later spread into Jack County, peaked near 280 residents in the 1920s and 1930s, and its cemetery holds roughly 900 marked graves.
