History

Geiger Cemetery near Sublime in Lavaca County dates to as early as 1868, when German settlers began burying their dead there; the oldest marker belongs to Herman Strunk, who died that September. It takes its name from Christoph Geiger, a German Lutheran minister trained in Basel, Switzerland, who organized the local Lutheran congregation in April 1868. In 1879 church trustees bought 24 acres that included the cemetery, and the associated Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church was completed in 1887 before being moved to Sublime in 1905.
