History
The Old Pecos County Jail in Fort Stockton is a two-story native sandstone building begun in 1882 and dedicated on the south side of the courthouse square, with its original holding cell dating to 1883. Prisoners were held on the upper floor while sheriffs, deputies, and jailers occupied the ground floor until the last sheriff moved out in 2000, and the cell area saw use from 1883 until 1973, when the jail was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is now operated by the Pecos County Historical Commission as a museum of local law enforcement, featuring the original cell and mid-20th-century cell blocks.
