History

This burial ground lies in the Lydia community about eight miles south of Avery, a settlement founded around 1870 and named for Lydia Pritchett, daughter of early postmaster David B. Pritchett. Pritchett deeded an acre to the Lydia Baptist Church in 1896, and a 1936 map showed two rural churches with adjoining cemeteries serving the farming community, which had accumulated roughly 460 burials by the mid-2000s.
