History

Free Hope Cemetery in northeastern Red River County served the local African American community and grew up around the Free Hope Methodist Episcopal Church. A deed dated 1877 conveyed one acre of the John Ware survey to the church for the burial ground. The oldest marked burial is Selah Becton, who died in 1885, and by 2004 the cemetery held about 429 documented burials.
