History

The Balinese Room was a celebrated nightclub built on a 600-foot pier that stretched from Galveston's seawall out over the Gulf of Mexico. Operated by brothers Sam and Rosario Maceo, it flourished in the 1930s and 1940s as an elite entertainment spot that also concealed illegal gambling shielded by the Maceos' political connections. The club earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places and reopened in 2001, but it was destroyed by Hurricane Ike on September 13, 2008, leaving only its entrance arch on the seawall.
