History

Mathew "Old Paint" Caldwell (1798–1842), a DeWitt Colony militia captain and resident of Gonzales, was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. Called "the Paul Revere of the Texas Revolution," he rode from Gonzales to Bastrop to rally men before the Battle of Gonzales in October 1835. The state erected a monument at his grave in the Gonzales cemetery in 1930.
