History

The Gonzales City Cemetery dates to 1838, making it one of the oldest public burial grounds in the county seat of Gonzales. By tradition, the remains of early settlers first buried in the town's original cemetery square were reinterred here in a common grave. Among those buried in the historic grounds are figures of the Texas Revolution, including Matthew Caldwell, Dr. George W. Barnett, and Major Valentine Bennet; a state historical marker was placed in 1966.
