History

The S. H. Kress and Co. Building at 604 Main Street in downtown Fort Worth was designed by New York architect Edward F. Sibbert and opened in August 1936, one of the few major construction projects built with private money in the city during the Great Depression. The five-story Art Deco building is clad in cream terra cotta with stylized Mayan-inspired ornament and served the Kress "five-and-dime" chain from 1936 to 1960. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 and converted to loft apartments in 2016.
