Fort Concho was established in 1867 at the junction of the North and South Concho rivers to guard the West Texas frontier and the mail and cattle routes crossing it, serving as a base for the 4th Cavalry and later the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry until it closed in 1889. Preservation efforts led to the founding of the Fort Concho museum in 1929, and the post was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961. This administration building anchors the restored fort, which today preserves about two dozen original and reconstructed structures owned by the City of San Angelo.
